Premature Birth Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new record?
Since recording we have been gigging, touring, and writing for an album. Since ‘A Ceremony of Power’ was released, we have been rehearsing for our upcoming shows at The Black Heart, London and Mammothfest.

2.You had released your new record at the end of June, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical direction of the newer material and also how does it differ from the previous demo you had released a while back?

The material on ‘A Ceremony of Power’ leans towards the symphonic and epic sounding Extreme Metal, but it still has all the venom and hatred of Premature Birth. It is quite different to the ‘Genocide’ demo. ‘Genocide’ was written by me, 'Ceremony' has been a collaboration of all five of us, so there’s a wider range of musical influence.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Awakening, invocation, hatred and misanthropy.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Premature Birth' and also do you feel your name might lead people to confuse you for being a death metal band instead of black metal?
I/We have always classed Premature Birth as Extreme Metal. Granted, our music and stage performance leads towards the Black Metal side… Yes, it does confuse people, but I quite like that. Even if people call us Black Metal, wasn’t the whole point of Black Metal to be different in the first place?

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Incineration Festival in May was by far the biggest and best show we have played. Stage shows are full of malice and rage.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for a full length album?
Possibly. We’ll see how things go.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
Not looking for a label yet. We did have some interest but decided not to go with it.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
Hit and miss. Some people love us, some people hate us. Expected, really.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Not like Morbid Angel’s latest album! Haha. Joking aside, I’m not entirely sure. The current songs we’ve been writing are more mature and feature stronger songwriting.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
During the writing of ‘Ceremony” I was listening to all sorts of stuff from 90’s gangsta rap to 1349. Nowadays I haven’t been listening to as much Black Metal. I did give ‘Grave Ekstasis’ by Irkallian Oracle a listen the other day.

11.Does Occultism play any role in your music?
I guess writing about invoking your inner demons could be linked to the occult and occult practice? I’m not too sure. Not an expert on it anyways.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

I’ve been doing some gaming recently.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for the interview and thank you to all who have supported Premature Birth.
