Flagellated Seraph Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have
never heard of you before?

Swedish Black Metal through the vision of AsO, dealing with the
sufferings of man’s striving for salvation and the glory of his
kingdom through death.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

A minimalistic view in the terms of production was taken that dates
back to the NWOBHM way of thinking with mostly two rhythm guitars that
also shares the leads.
No layer upon layer of guitars so to speak, the production is meant to
be stripped down to the essentials.
The drums are supposed to be felt like nails on tender skin, knowing
when to caress and when to pierce the flesh.
You are supposed to hear that it’s a force of flesh and blood and not
a computerized wall of sound that performs these hymns of joy.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores
with the music?

The art and malignant beauty that lies in death, the divine and the
torments of the flesh.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

Flagellated Seraph combines the flagellation of Christ with the
seraph’s, thus speaking of reversed worship.

5. Has the band been able to play out live yet, or is this strictly a
studio project?

Live shows are more or less unimportant, our hymns will reach more
worthy minds all around the world through a studio recording rather
than playing in front of a drunken crowd that’s looking for a good
time to spend the Friday night.

6. I notice when I listen to your music you have a very different
sound from most modern bands, how do you feel your music differs?

Before the recording process began a decision was made that the
production and sound of the album should combine the analog and
simplistic feel of an album like Iron Maiden’s classic “Killers” with
the viciousness and intensity of Funeral Mist’s opus “Salvation”.
Thus choosing Devo of Marduk and his studio Endarker for the mixing
and mastering part felt very natural, since we did not want a regular
modern sounding metal production nor a shitty bestial kvlt
anti-production.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by
fans of black metal?

The album “Beyond Salvation” has on the time of writing not yet been
released to the masses, having a release date of 2 weeks from now.
Thus only a selected few and some early critics has heard it in its
full glory, none of which has experienced it with the complete artwork
in their hands.
But the feedback from those who have heard it has been positive, which
is only natural since the songwriting and riffs found on the album is
nothing less than brilliant.

8. Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this full time?

The work leading up to the completion of “Beyond Salvation” has been fulltime.
Now that it’s finished and ready to be presented to the masses our
work is done and the seraph will head back to the vaults until it’s
time to awake yet again.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

This I do not know since no more material is written under the banner
of the Flagellated Seraph, thus it is unnecessary to speculate about.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your
music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Inspiration for the work of Flagellated Seraph comes not only from
music but from life, faith and the life and fate of those who died for
it.
There are way too many bands worth mentioning which has inspired me
personally in some way or another, though when it comes to more modern
releases I would recommend any of your readers 90% of all the releases
from the two record labels Norma Evangelium Diaboli and Sepulchral
Voice Records.

11. How would you describe your views on Occultism?

You take what others have built, examine it, destroy it and build your
own temple consisting of the pieces that fit your vision.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Without knowledge of history and writings dealing with the divine
F.Seraph would not have come to life, at least not in this form.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

If your readers know what is best for them they should feast upon our
temple known as “Beyond Salvation”, released through the dedicated
will of Hellthrasher Productions, out by the end of July 2012 on high
quality digipack cd with stunning artwork by A.Death.
